To Fog or not to Fog…

It’s looking very likely that Coronavirus is going to be around for quite some time. The crisis has impacted on all walks of life and the safety of staff and customers is high on the agenda of many businesses and organisations.

Disinfecting and sanitising your premises should be a priority, particularly if you have high volumes of human traffic and even more so if someone with the virus has passed through your building.

Daily cleaning is more important than ever but another measure as an extra precaution in the workplace is fogging. But what is it and is it really effective against Covid-19?

Firstly, fogging is the administering of disinfectant from a fogging machine which turns the liquid solution into a fog or light mist and is able to disinfect and sanitise large, often hard to reach areas that can often be missed or forgotten, and small, confined spaces that are hard to reach with traditional cleaning procedures. It should be viewed as the belt and braces method that is used following antibacterial cleaning practices.

We have carried out extensive research on fogging and purchased a machine that can disinfect and sanitise and can also be used for odour control and to deodorise smoke contaminated buildings. The solution we decided to use is called Sterizar which is an alcohol free cleaner and sanitiser that is manufactured to contain one of the fastest acting and most powerful germ killing products available today being effective within 30 seconds and killing 99.9999% of bacteria yet contains no irritants within its formulation.

Using the latest Advanced Barrier Technology SteriZar not only provides rapid kill against Bacteria and Viruses, but provides a residual barrier onto the surface that continues to work for at least 30 days after the initial application.

However, we recently met with the owner of Astral Hygiene, Anna, who has extensive knowledge of the cleaning industry – in fact, what Anna doesn’t know about cleaning isn’t worth knowing! We told her that being open and honest about the service we provide is absolutely paramount and she agreed with us that there are many people out there capitalising on the pandemic, claiming that fogging will provide protection for X amount of hours or days when this simply is not true. As Anna said in her informative blog on the Astral Hygiene website they are “either ill-informed or lying to you.  When you bring contamination into an environment, it doesn’t matter what that environment has been cleaned with, it is contaminated as soon as that contamination is brought in.

While we know that SteriZar is completely safe Anna has told us about an alternative solution that is produced right here in the Scottish Borders,. It has very few ingredients – the main one being Hypochlorous Acid. This is present in our bodies, so it has been designed by mother nature – it is 100% natural, non-toxic and entirely compostable.

We decided to ask Anna if she could arrange for our machine to be tested by the scientists producing this chemical to give a definitive validation that we can use it to disinfect and sanitise premises locally. At the time of writing this blog we had not received the results of the lab tests, but we will let you know the outcome when we know more. If we cannot get verification, we know the product we are currently using is safe but wouldn’t it be fabulous to support a local manufacturer?
